"Ehrlichiosis Infection"  from a certain Tick (not all ticks are the same)

Brown Dog Ticks Fever
Ehrlichiosis, also known as Canine Rickettsiosis Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (Rickettsia rickettsii), Canine Hemorrhagic Fever, Canine Typhus, Tracker dog disease, and Tropical canine pancytopenia is a tick-borne disease of dogs usually caused by the organism Ehrlichia Canis - if showing other acute symptoms refer to Tick formulas - which will help you know what to do immediately.

You may not see a tick but if you do

Grasp the tick very close to your pet's skin with a tick removal tool or a pair of tweezers. Carefully pull the tick's body away from the skin.  Or buy a "Tick Stick" tool and have it on hand if ever needed.  Once it's off, flush it down the toilet. Once it's off, flush it down the toilet. Then disinfect your dog or cat's skin with Vitamin C powder (made into a paste or liquid by adding some water).
* If suspect a toxic tick, then vitamin c can remove toxins, discomfort, also give a teaspoon of vitamin c in some water ( about 1/4 cup or less) and oral syringe small sips till liquid is taken. (not all ticks have are toxic or have side effects)

Signs and Symptoms of Ehrlichiosis
The symptoms and severity of illness seen with Ehrlichiosis depend on the species of Ehrlichia involved and the immune response of the dog. Generally, Erlichia canis appears to produce the most severe illness, and infections tend to progress through various stages. The acute phase occurs within the first few weeks of being infected and is rarely fatal. Recovery can occur, or the dog can enter a "subclinical phase," which can last for years, where there are no symptoms. Some dogs eventually progress to the chronic phase, where very severe illness can develop. However, in practice, it is difficult to distinguish these phases.

Signs and symptoms of Brown Dog Fever "ehrlichiosis" may include:

  • Fever.
  • Lethargy.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Weight loss.
  • Abnormal bleeding (e.g., nosebleeds, bleeding under the skin - looks like little spots or patches of bruising).
  • Enlarged lymph nodes.
  • Enlarged spleen.
  • Pain and stiffness (due to arthritis and muscle pain).
  • Coughing.
  • Discharge from the eyes and/or nose.
  • Vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Inflammation of the eye.
  • Neurological symptoms (e.g., in-coordination, depression, paralysis, etc.).

Signs of other organ involvement can appear in the chronic form, especially kidney disease.  Note:  Anaplasma platys causes recurrent low platelet counts but tends to produce only mild symptoms, if any.
Diagnosis of Ehrlichiosis
It can be difficult to confirm a diagnosis of Ehrlichiosis. Blood tests typically show a decreased number of platelets ("thrombocytopenia") and sometimes decreased numbers of red blood cells (anemia) and/or white blood cells.
"Prophylactics are homeopathic" for Brown Dog Tick Fever (Ehrlichiosis) and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (Rickettsia rickettsii), Babesia, Borrelia (Lyme).  The Homeopathic formulas can be used as a "prophylactic" (prevention) or treatment for your Pets.

Hemotrophic Mycoplasmosis in a Dog

Parasitic Blood Infection (Haemobartonellosis)
* Use this Brown Dog Tick Treatment AN234 Set as well as AN038-1 Anemia remedy

Two species of hemotrophic mycoplasmas have been identified in dogs—Mycoplasma haemocanis and Candidatus Mycoplasma haemoatoparvum. Most cases of hemotrophic mycoplasmosis are caused by M. haemocanis in dogs. The mycoplasma is a class of bacterial parasites belonging to the order of Mollicutes. They are able to survive without oxygen, and lack true cell walls, making them resistant to antibiotics and therefore a greater challenge to detect and treat. They are the most common cause of urinary tract infections and pneumonia.

Hemotrophic mycoplasmosis is the result of infection of the red blood cells by the mycoplasma parasite M. haemocanis transmitted to dogs by the Brown Dog Tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, or by contact with infected blood such as receiving a blood transfusion with infected blood. The mycoplasmas attach to the surface membrane of the red blood cells causing the blood cells to become fragile and damaged. This decreases the lifespan of the red blood cells and can lead to hemolysis and anemia.

Dogs usually will not show signs of illness or suffer from severe anemia (lack of red blood cells) with this kind of infection unless they have had their spleens removed (splenectomy). Since the purpose of the spleen is to filter and remove damaged red blood cells, the lack of this organ allows the mycoplasma to take a stronger hold in the system, and the body suffers systemically from the overload of damaged blood cells.  Some dogs will exhibit weight loss, lethargy, decreased appetite, pale gums, jaundice, increased respiratory rate, and increased heart rate.

Infected dogs who have had their spleens removed can quickly develop a fatal anemia.

Symptoms and Types
  • Mild signs, unless the spleen has been surgically removed, if their spleens removed can quickly develop a fatal anemia.
  • Lack of appetite
  • Listlessness
  • Whitish to pale purple gums

When is its high season for the toxic type of ticks in Australia?

Larvae appear late Feb to April / May (not causing toxic damages)
Nymphs March to September / October (occasional mild toxins, opportunity to gain resistance in tick-infested areas).
The adult population emerges in August to February, peaking around December (Toxic season so search for ticks on your pets daily!)

Signs of Tick Toxicity:

Signs most commonly seen include - Vomiting and/or gagging or refusing food, a slight wobbliness of the hindquarters which worsens to paralysis and inability to stand, a change in the sound of bark or meow, vomiting and / or gagging or refusing food, difficulty breathing (slow and laboured, often with a grunting noise on expiration).

* If your pet is showing ANY of these signs and you don't have a natural treatment for tick bite, it is IMPORTANT that your pet is treated appropriately AS SOON AS POSSIBLE as untreated animals may die. e.g. vitamin C oral dosing, Bach Flowers Rescue Remedy, see below information.

Contact us to express post-treatment to you. If needing immediate support please seek a good vet who has dealt with tick bites. Sometimes you may find a tick or ticks on your pet and it is not showing any clinical signs. In such cases, you should remove all the ticks, keep your pet quiet and closely watch him/her for the next 24-36 hours as signs may still develop despite the removal of the ticks. If this happens, treatment is necessary. The toxin is not secreted in detectable amounts until 3 days of attachment.

Clinical signs of the animal being sick are often seen at day 3-4 with peak toxicity on days 5-6.

These 3 days gives us a chance to find and to remove ticks before they inject large amounts of toxin. Not every animal will become paralyzed or get really sick. Weight, age, and immune competence count smaller and younger animals such as puppies, kittens, foals, calves, lambs, and kids are more affected. Tick infested areas may continuously expose dogs so they develop immune resistance however it only lasts for a couple of months and not until the next season. However, infestation by adults can occur at any time of the year when conditions are suitable, even in mid-winter.
